MAKING THE BOLSTER

MAKING THE BOLSTER

Here’s a WIP of 2 chef  knives. The bolster is made of messing and hand hammered. The blades are triple layer Japanese San Mai forged blades. This technique has a high carbon tool steel layer sandwiched between 2 softer steels and forge welded  together. The high  carbon steel cutting layer “White paper steel”, is practically void of impurities. This high purity allows a very fine grained martensic steel structure which is responsible for the exceptional sharpness and edge-holding ability of the steel.
